Teaching

The Laboratory of Geomatics – LABGEO contributes to the teaching activities of the University of Pavia through courses, practical exercises, laboratory sessions, field surveys and thesis supervision.

Its educational approach combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience, guiding students through the different stages of geospatial data acquisition, processing, analysis and representation.

Teaching activities mainly cover surveying, GNSS positioning, terrestrial and UAV photogrammetry, laser scanning, mobile mapping systems, remote sensing, digital cartography, geographic information systems and applied computing.

Theoretical education and practical activities

The teaching approach combines lectures, computer-based exercises and field activities. Students can engage with every stage of a geomatics project, from survey planning and data acquisition to data processing, quality assessment and presentation.

Practical activities introduce students to the instruments, sensors, software and procedures used in civil engineering, architecture, territorial and environmental studies, and agriculture.

Particular attention is paid to developing the ability to select the most appropriate methods and technologies based on each project’s objectives and the characteristics of the available data.

Courses

LABGEO members teach courses within several degree programs at the University of Pavia.

The dedicated page presents the courses, lecturers, relevant degree programs and links to the official course information published by the University.

Theses

The laboratory offers and supervises theses focusing on geomatics and its applications. Activities may include field surveys, testing of sensors and instruments, processing of topographic, photogrammetric, LiDAR and satellite data, GIS analysis, programming and the production of three-dimensional models.

Thesis topics are connected with the laboratory’s research activities and may also be developed in collaboration with public bodies, institutions and companies.

Practical exercises and field activities

Practical exercises allow students to apply the knowledge acquired during their courses through direct experience.

Activities may include topographic and GNSS surveys, photogrammetric acquisitions, UAV surveys, three-dimensional scanning, image and point-cloud processing, and producing cartographic outputs.

Outreach and other educational activities

LABGEO also participates in outreach, dissemination and training activities aimed at school pupils, university students, professionals and external organizations interested in the applications of geomatics.

Workshops, seminars, visits and other educational initiatives provide opportunities for interaction between the University, professional practice and the local community.
