Biography

Luca Viola holds a degree in Digital Technologies for Constructions, Environment and Territory (TeDCAT) and works as a contract researcher at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Pavia. He is a member of the Laboratory of Geomatics (LABGEO), where he contributes to activities concerning three-dimensional surveying and geospatial data processing.

His work focuses on mobile laser scanning systems based on SLAM technology and the quality assessment of point clouds. His main interests include metric accuracy, geometric noise, registration stability, and comparison with reference datasets acquired using terrestrial laser scanners and high-precision surveying instruments.

His applied research activities concern the rapid surveying of indoor environments and the built heritage, as well as the comparative assessment of low-cost and professional SLAM systems, with the aim of identifying their performance, limitations and potential applications within geomatics workflows.
